Many operators are currently wondering what will really change for them with the new Edition 7 of IEC 60079-11. The answer is clear: for end customers, everything (still) remains the same.
📌 Background: What's new?
The IEC 60079-11 standard regulates the requirements for ignition protection devices with intrinsically safe type of protection "i".
With Edition 7, the standard has been revised to take account of current technical developments.
➡️ Important: This new edition is not yet harmonized - it is therefore not yet part of the binding state of the art in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
🔍 What does this mean in concrete terms for operators and buyers?
âś… 1. still usable: devices after Ed. 6
Devices already on the market or installed with valid Ed. 6 certification retain their admissibility.
There is no obligation to dismantle, retrofit or convert.
🛠️ 2. Manufacturer obligations only from 2027
Only when Ed. 6 is officially withdrawn (probably from 2027) will manufacturers have to carry out new certifications in accordance with Ed. 7.
But even then, old certifications may continue to be sold and operated.
đź’ˇ 3rd Ed. 7 as a purchase criterion for new projects
Anyone planning for the long term can now opt for Ed. 7-compliant products - if available.
Some of these offer more technical options, but are not yet ATEX-harmonized.
🧾 Conclusion for our customers:
Don't panic, no conversion necessary.
The new Ed. 7 only affects the manufacturer side for the time being.
For operators and purchasers, the stock remains fully operational and legally compliant.
