New guide to the ATEX Directive published - What will change with Guide No. 5?

Brussels, June 2025 – The European Commission has published an updated version of Guideline No. 5 regarding the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. The new guideline is an important document for manufacturers, traders, operators, and testing organizations in the field of explosion protection.

What is the ATEX guide?

The ATEX Guidelines are not a law, but an official interpretative document from the European Commission. It helps all market participants correctly interpret the regulations of the ATEX Directive – for example, regarding questions about:

  • Product categories and device groups
  • Zone classification
  • Conformity assessment
  • Labeling and documentation
  • Combination of devices and systems

What's new in version 5?

The guideline No. 5 (2025) replaces the previous version from 2019. Some of the key changes:

🔸 Clearer distinction between product and system certification

🔸 New section on the digitization of conformity documents

🔸 Additions to Market Surveillance and CE Marking

🔸 Adaptation to new standards such as EN ISO 80079‑36/-37 and IEC 60079‑11 Ed. 7

The new version is also more focused on practical questions from the industry – with many examples, illustrations, and case scenarios.

What does this mean for customers and operators?

For users and operators of Ex devices, there are no immediate changes to obligations or approvals. Devices that have been correctly approved according to ATEX will remain valid.

But:

▶️ New devices and systems will be monitored more closely in the future, especially regarding digital components or modular systems.

▶️ Documentation (e.g., operating instructions, EU declarations of conformity) must be complete and available at all times – including digitally.
