With Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/597 of 28 March 2025, the European Commission amended Annex I of Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/1668 and included the new harmonized standard EN 14983:2024 - Explosion prevention and protection in underground mines - Equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage.
✨ Key statements of the amendment
- New entry: In Annex I of Decision 2022/1668, the line “42a. EN 14983:2024 - Equipment and protective systems for firedamp drainage” has been added.
- Withdrawal of obsolete standard: The old reference EN 14983:2007 has been deleted.
- Entry into force: The decision applies from publication on April 1, 2025, and application of the standard begins on October 1, 2026.
⚡ Practical tip
Companies in underground mining should check their specifications and order documents for mine gas extraction systems now and inform suppliers of the new EN 14983:2024 standard at an early stage. This will ensure that only compliant devices can be used from October 2026.
⚠️ Attention with
- Old certificates: Systems equipped in accordance with EN 14983:2007 lose their presumption of conformity after October 1, 2026. A timely conversion or recertification must be taken into account.
- Technical documentation: Check your risk assessments and operating instructions for the correct version of the standard.
